Donuts in Japan!

Ever since I visited Mister Donut on a trip to Japan in 2019, I've been obsessed with Japanese donut shops and have been saving them on Google Maps and following shops on Instagram with the plan of going back to Japan and trying as many of them as possible. And on a recent trip, we had donuts *almost* every day! The first stop was Jack in the Donuts, a popular chain located in the Hanshin Department Store food hall.  We tried the Uji Matcha Malasada, Galaxy Donut, and Canelé. The Canelé was the best tasting one with a caramel glaze. The Galaxy donut had almost zero sweetness at all which was interesting, but had good texture and went well with coffee. The Uji Matcha was also very good if you like matcha. The concept of Jack in the Donuts is that they feature donuts from around the world and switch out the menu frequently so there is always something new to try. Stay tuned for more donut adventures!

When in Canada ...

No donut lover's trip to Canada would be complete without a visit to Tim Hortons ! We stopped by the location on Robson Street in Vancouver and tried three different Timbits (that's what they call their donut holes). My favorite was the Canadian Fireworks Timbit . It was essentially the Birthday Cake Timbit, but it was topped with Pop Rocks. I somehow overlooked that detail in the description, so I got an unexpected surprise when it started popping in my mouth! I also enjoyed the Lime Cheesecake Timbit . It was filled with a custardy lime cheesecake filling and coated with sweet lime sugar. I'd never had a filled donut hole before, so that was a fun new experience. Lastly, I tried the Cappuccino Timbit . Compared to the other two, it was just okay—they were definitely more exciting. That said, it paired nicely with the black coffee I ordered to go.

A Snack Before the Movies at Mikiko Mochi Donuts

Had to stop in and get one of the  best gluten-free donuts in town  last night before heading over to Laurelhurst Theater to see  I Love Boosters ! The Matcha Banana Pudding was an unexpected and delicious combination, one of the monthly specials for May. And also couldn't resist the Passionfruit Curd, one of their signature flavors that's always on the menu. There's so many great restaurants on NE 28th, you can eat and drink your way from one end to the other! Oh, and go see I Love Boosters!

Bobadochi on Alberta Street

Mochi donuts! Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside—made with rice flour and shaped into a ring of eight little dough balls. Mochi donuts have gained a lot of popularity here in the U.S. over the past few years, and now we’ve got a new spot just down the street from us in NE Portland. But Bobadochi has more than just mochi donuts—they also serve K-dogs (Korean-style corn dogs) and have an extensive drink menu. And guess what? My niece Haylee works there! So, needless to say, I’ve been there quite a few times. Some of my favorite flavors so far are the Ube Butter Mochi and the Matcha Strawberry Crunch. For drinks, I recommend the Okinawa Brown Sugar Latte. They have a few other locations around Oregon too, so definitely check them out!

Hi, I’m Sean, and I like donuts. Thanks for visiting my blog! I started Sean’s Donut Party as a way to journal about the donuts I’ve tried and the shops I’ve visited. Back in 2020, I began illustrating donuts and posting them on Instagram, and I’ve created almost 100 so far. Now the journey continues here on Blogger. With this new format, I’ll keep sharing illustrations and donut adventures, while also adding more photography and detailed descriptions of the donuts and the shops. One of my favorite parts of this project is combining my love of travel with my love of donuts—checking out unique donut spots in every city I visit. I’m heading to Japan this September and already have a long list of places to try, so stay tuned! I’m always looking for new recommendations, so if you have a favorite spot, let me know.
